PRE-BURNING OF THE WICK: You should also do a pre-burn (preferably twice) before lighting up your Kerosene heater. Although the new wicks you buy look like they are pre-burned, the top of the wick is usually very uneven. You need to take only 10 minutes and do the pre-burn. You'll be guaranteed a perfect beautiful flame in your Perfection Heater. Here is a very good informative video on how to do it.
